Circle of Life in Johannesburg

Recently, I swapped with one of my friends Kristie in order to make our rosters a little more different and fun! I gave her my Rome flight (where I have been many a time before) and she gave me her Johannesburg flight! I was excited to go, seeing as I have heard many great things about South Africa and wanted to try a new destination ๐Ÿ™‚ The flight was an average length (8 or so hours) and seeing as it was a night flight it was pretty quiet. Once we landed in Joburg, a few of us decided to meet up to go to the Lion Park, which is a wildlife sanctuary for endangered white lions and their common cousins. This is a great rehabilitation initiative and was a must on our list as we get to actually come up close to the lion cubs, whom where just adorable! The tour is actually run by an ex crew member, which was a nice addition to the day.

Our first stop at the Lion park was the safari in the car. The wildlife, including wilder beast, gazelles, springbok, zebras, cheetahs, lions and painted dogs roam free (in segregated areas of course) and you can drive around slowly and see them living in their natural habitat. To be so close to some of Africa’s Big 5 was the most amazing experience ever! Some juvenile lionsย even ran in front of our car and started play fighting in front of us! So cute ๐Ÿ˜‰ After the car safari, the rain held out and we went into the lion camp where the baby cubs (up to six months old) are kept. We had a short visit (less than 5 minutes), so that the cubs didn’t get tired or agitated, and we were assure that the cubs only remain in the human interaction area for an hour or so per day, in order to familiarise themselves further with humans (as they were born in captivity and hand reared). Usually there is a giraffe feeding area, but the giraffe was feeling bit skittish because of the rain and she decided not to come and visit us. Never mind, next time!

Once back at the hotel, I indulged in a milkshake (peanut butter and banana) that is famous to our hotel, and we met up with the rest of the crew for dinner, at the Meat Company. I have tried the Meat Co. in Dubai, but nothing compares to the meal I had that night! For less than $25 AUD, I had a perfect sirloin steak with mushroom sauce, a half rack of ribs and a side of chips ๐Ÿ˜€ Needless to say I was very full, but very satisfied afterwards!

The flight back passed in a blur as my cousin was coming to visit and I was beyond excited for it ๐Ÿ˜€ more about that soon! Happy Virtual Travelling xx
