Athens, Revisited

After having to call sick for a trip that I was very excited about (Bangkok-Hongkong) on the A380, I was given Home Standby, and then an Istanbul turnaround (only the longest turnaround that we have…), karma for calling sick I suppose! This all turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I had a few days off in a row, meaning that I could go on a little trip to Athens to see my family there!

After less than an hour’s sleep (we went out the night before…) I went to the airport, checked in, boarded, fell asleep…and woke up in Athens! My “cousin” Efie picked me up from the airport, with two distant cousins of mine that I had never met before, but were very welcoming nonetheless. Efie is a nurse and had to work on the day that I arrived, so she went back to work and the girls and I went back to her apartment, I freshened up and they took me out for an amazing greek lunch, gyros with chips and a coke, MY FAVOURITE!

After this late “lunch”, we went to Syntagma, the main square in Athens for a look around at the shops and a few drinks, but not before we hit up the flea markets for second hand books, post cards and pretty little necklaces. I love markets! Then we went to a lookout point near the Acropolis so I could admire the view. It was breathtaking! After this, we passed an outdoor cinema that was showing Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face” so naturally we made plans to see it the following night.

By this time I was so tired I was practically a zombie, so after one last drink in a trendy bar with cool bronze glasses, it was time for bed!

The next morning, Efie made me a delicious selection of “meze” breakfast, and after that we went to the markets to look at more trinkets and so I could buy some of those copper cups for myself!

Breakfast feast!

Lunch was late, so we stopped buy at a pastry shop where I had the best Baklava I have ever tasted!

Finally it was time for lunch, more gyros, chips and cheese! (and pork :D) Unfortunately, after lunch I discovered that my roster had changed, I had “can use” that turned into a Nairobi layover, so I had to leave Athens that night instead of the following night! It was such a short, but very memorable trip, and I am so lucky to have family and friend s all over this big old world!
