Touring Tofino

Again, there have been delays theย past week, I was flying, sick and now I am on reserve as of tomorrow and so therefore I have all the time in the world ๐Ÿ˜‰ back to the adventure sharing about our time in Canada….

Tofino is a small but very popular surfing town on Vancouver Island that exceeded all of my expectations! I was expecting something tiny, with nothing to do or see or admire,ย but I was (very happily) mistaken. After another yummy night out in White Rock, we woke up bright and early for the ferry trip over to Vancouver Island. I was amazed at the fact that the ferry had a cafeteria, shops and games room…not to mention that the cars come over on the ferry too! Amazing! You can sit in your car and sleep in what looks like a big car park, or you can stand on the deck and freeze to death and then drink tea and read whilst everyone else sleeps (this is what I opted for). We went out to the viewing deck, where it was frighteningly cold, but what we could see through the fog was beautiful! We even saw a porpoise, which was the highlight of my day so far ๐Ÿ™‚

Once we got to Vancouver Island, it was quite a drive to Tofino, on the very tip of the Island, it is almost completely surrounded by beaches, inlets and coves, truly breathtaking. We drove for ages until we reached a little town called Coombs, which had a gourmet food shop with goats on the roof. It was awesome! After food shopping, lunch, and me being mistaken as Elsa from ‘Frozen’ (so happy), we drove and drove some more until we reached Tofino and wandered around in the rain for a bit. After settling in to our holiday house, we went to explore the pebbly beach and catch crabs. It was very childish but very, very fun. We had an early night to prepare ourselves for our next big day… WHALE WATCHING!

I was super excited about this because it was Summer, which is prime whale watching time and there are Orcas in the surrounding bays! Unfortunately, after we made fun of ourselves for being on the Seniors Tour, the Captain of the boat decided that there were in fact no whales to be seen in the sheltered bays, we ventured out onto the open ocean, far further than we should have, and ran into some horrible weather that resulted in half of the tour (me included) being sick. There was something so symbolic about another crew cleaning up MY vomit for a change ๐Ÿ˜‰ No whales, some sea sickness, a bath and a glass of wine later, we sat down to dinner and I greedily replaced my lost energy with Poutine! After dinner, we walked along the beach and saw a wedding party releasing lanterns out over the beach. It was very romantic and lovely, except for when one of the lanterns nearly took down the whole bridal party. Luckily, everyone was fine and it made for some funny after dinner entertainment ๐Ÿ˜€

The next day we did some (more) outdoorsy, Canadian activities. First up was sea kayaking. Safe to say I have terrible balance/ posture/ general coordination and so I was slow and uncooperative unless we saw animals, in which case i was pretty much leading the group trying to get a glimpse of a racoon or similar animals (that Canadians liken to rats but I think are rare and special and not common like kangaroos). After a few blisters and me being stuck in a huge, slimy web of Sea Kelp countless times, we called it a day and went back into the harbour, where the sun started to shine and all was made better by a beer, burger and the World Cup at 10am. I actually found the lunch more exiting than the game, and James was so happy about the Netherlands winning that I managed to eat more than usual of his burger because he was happily discussing the game with his dad. WIN FOR TAYLOR! Just in case we hadn’t done enough physical activity to last me a life time, we decided to go to another beach and try paddle boarding. This was awesome, because I didn’t really want to go in the first place, but once I discovered that I was good at it, and therefore paddle boarding is the best sport ever, I am a pro and I am in fact the tiniest bit coordinated after all! After another nice family dinner, we went exploring and found a beach that had a COUGAR in the area :O But we didn’t see it or anything else Canadian other than hippies and sand!

I love going to the beach in shorts and a jumper! I can;t really do it in Dubai so I was happy to have the option in Canada!

Our last day in Tofino we went whale watching again (each time is free after the first if no whales are spotted) and this time opted for a super speedy Zodiac boat. It was much more zippy, fun, and cold and I got sun and windburn! James dragged me to the beach again for more paddle boarding, but they were out of boards and so we went kayaking again, in a much more relaxed and fun setting/ beach/ weather. SO relaxing that I should I would show off and be fast and coordinated (never a win for me) and I ended up wedging my kayak between two rocks near the shore and screaming when the tide went out and left me suspended and dangerously close to capsizing! James was very unhelpful, laughing his head off and not rescuing me at all! The day ended well with Fish Tacos from the famous Tacofino, a romantic dinner where I accidentally consumed half a bottle of wine and then we walked home and took stupid photos of nothing. Bliss!

Heaven :)

The way back from Vancouver Island comprised of a visit to petting farm (orchestrated by yours truly) a European lunch to save our arteries from countless servings of fried goodness and some beautiful weather and scenery on the way back! ๐Ÿ™‚
