Sydney featured massively in my roster this month, flanking either side of my Mauritius flight with a multitude of flying hours and very little sleep!! The flight is 14 hours each way, which is epic as a passenger, so as crew it is really no different! We only get approximately two hours for sleep (and in which time we have to get changed in and out of our uniform, too), and while it sounds decent I find it hard to rest because I always have bad dreams about the aircraft when I am in the rest compartment! Anyway, the flight was long but the customers were Australian so they were obviously awesome 😉 after I checked in, I watched the news, relishing all the Aussie accents, and I went to sleep. It was a gloriously nice day when I awoke, so I walked down to Circular Quay and treated myself to a nice gourmet breakfast. After getting spectacularly lost, I met up with a family friend for lunch and to meet her gorgeous baby. After my avocado fix, I went back to the city and walked around the shops, bought a book and some macarons and tried (and failed) to sleep. I was so jetlagged after my leave, flying there and back and then operating, it was ridiculous and I am sorry for whoever I frantically contacted at 1am questioning my career choices!
My second Sydney was only made possible by a stroke of luck and my amazing friends here in Dubai. Really, they have become like my family here and I am so grateful to have such amazing people become a part of my life in just 6 months! I almost missed my flights as I had left my ID at my friend’s house, but after they hand delivered it to me and put me in a taxi, I made it 5 minutes before check in. I was on a high after knowing I had made it into the briefing room, so the flight was a breeze. I was tired by the end, but I had plenty of rest before so I managed to smile all the way to Sydney 🙂 After we landed, I had a cup of tea and put myself to bed. The next day was going to be busy! I had some running around to do, so in the morning I did that, and then met up with my old friend Ellie, from Perth, who has recently moved to Sydney to be a big shot journalist 😉 Would you believe that I actually knew her from the good old days of modelling classes…crazy! After I had my first breakfast (smashed avocados with cherry tomatoes, grapes and cottage cheese on gluten free toast) and A COFFEE * gasp * I hate coffee usually, but I thought when in Sydney…have a latte haha! Ellie took me to The Grounds of Alexandria for breakfast no. 2, and it was great! I had a breakfast burger with polenta chips and (you guessed it) BACON! Yay for Bacon! After that we went to Bondi, where I saw the iconic Icebergs pool and went snap happy over the gorgeous beach. Then I stalked the Bondi Rescue life guard post, and had a cheesy photo outside it! We had a fried mars bar (my friend Marcella is from Sydney and said I’d love it. I did, she knows me too well!), and then went back to the city for some shopping. We caught the ferry from East Balmain, and we had a superb view of the harbour bridge! After shopping, we checked out Sydney’s vivid light festival and then finished off the night with a bargain $12 steak and chips! It was a day filled with lots of laughter and good food in sunny Sydney! As far as layovers go, that is pretty much perfection! At the moment I am on home standby (waiting to be called out, possibly, to a flight) and the suspense is killing me! I will keep you posted 🙂 Happy travelling and happy living! xx
